I have been using an iPhone for about eight months. It’s probably the longest in four years that I’ve used the same phone. Before an iPhone became my phone of choice, I was an avid supporter of Android. I still love and miss the Android platform but there are a few things that I don’t miss at all. With all of the swirling talk and speculation over the new features of iOS 6
and the next iPhone I’m reminded of how solid and feature rich Android is.
For the last few years, Apple has been adding to iOS and iPhone hardware, features that Android phones already have. As we talk about all the things we hope for in the next iPhone you can probably already find those features in a phone that’s already on the market. I reeeaally hope Apple wow’s us with something we haven’t seen.
Now don’t get me wrong, I love me some Apple and recommend to people left and right that they should just get an iPhone but I will never enter an argument proclaiming that iPhone is greater than Android because honestly I can argue a lot of good things on both sides. Then why do I recommend iPhone left and right? Because there’s too many Androids on different carriers to keep up with and to choose from. Plus, call me shallow but it’s the best looking.
With all that aside, I would like to take the time to spread some Android love.
What I love about Android and Hope Apple Adds or Makes Better in the iPhone 5
Built in Free Turn by Turn Navigation! This is one of the things I miss the most.
Seriously, Siri needs to start telling you how to get somewhere and not just pulling up directions. If the rumor that Apple is doing away with Google Maps and providing their own 3D maps, please please add this feature.
Widgets!
I love them. I really like having the weather and temperature visible on my homescreen. Thankful for the new tweak for jailbroken iPhones. Apple will probably never add this feature by the way.
Customization!
Themes, live wallpapers, different app launchers, different keyboards ( i reaaally loved using swype but I surprisingly did not miss it as much as I thought I would). Again, I’m thankful for jailbreak.
Settings within each individual app
It’s really annoying having to go into the settings of the phone then find the app that you would like to change the settings for. If you’ve only ever used an iPhone then that doesn’t seem like it’s a big deal and I have adjusted but it is a lot more convenient.
Integration with other apps
On Android when I want to share a picture, it gives me every option to do that right on the screen. So I click the picture and every app that can do anything with a picture pops up ex. sms, email, evernote, twitter, facebook, flickr, instagram etc. To some this may seem like too much but to me it gave me easy options. If I want to add a picture to several different sites with an iPhone I have to open each of those sites individually. This is just one example but from almost any app on Android you can share information to whatever apps allow it.
Seamless Google Integration
It can only be expected that in a Google device that they would make sure that their apps sync well with each other. Maps, gmail, calendar, contacts, talk, voice, love it!
I have all of those things on my iPhone, just saying that I like how it all works on Android.
If you’re an Android user and have been feeling iPhone envy, remember that your phone is still a beast. And if you’re thinking about switching, make sure you wait until they announce the next one.
